Wandin Baptist Church has been serving the community for over 100 years. Here is a short history of how the church has evolved over the years.
-
In the early 1900’s Miss Olive Clegg commenced a Sunday School in a house in Picnic Hill.
-
Home meetings were commenced by Mr Tranter overseen by Rev M.L. Murphy
-
In 1905 the Picnic Hill Baptist Church was first built with help from the Lilydale Baptist Church. Mr Atkinson conducted musical evenings; Mr Bert Thorowgood led Christian Endeavour and Youth Group.
-
Rev JJ Proctor, a man of the people and loved by everyone served the Church
-
Trevor Morris and Fred Levitt packed the Church for evangelistic meetings
-
The Church moved to the current site and was remodelled. Bill Taylor was the Church administrator and Elsie Taylor led the Sunday School. Ron Hartly played the music and led the worship and his wife Dorothy led the Girls Brigade. Mrs Pat Edwards also led the Sunday School.
-
Pastor Bruce Kelly was called as the first sole Pastor for Wandin Baptist. During Bruce’s ministry the church numbers increased; the little church became too small so they moved to the Wandin Senior Citizen’s Hall
-
In July 1988 the Church was constituted as a member of the Baptist Union of Victoria with 34 members.
-
In 1993 Revs Rowland and Jan Croucher were appointed as Pastors of the Church; the house next to the Church was purchased and established as a Community House. During this period many groups were established including a Disability Friendship Club, a Youth Group, Sunday school, Play group, Craft Group, Men’s and Women’s Bible Studies, Senior’s Group and Women’s Ministry
-
Alan Smith was appointed as Pastor and assisted in consolidating the ministry and finances of the Church. This was a period of co-operation with other churches in the community.
-
Reverends John and Val Billingham were appointed as joint Pastors, and work commenced on the building of the present church buildings. John supervised and worked on the building of the Church. In March 2010 the building was completed and opened.
-
In March 2011, Rev Ray McDonald was inducted as an Intentional Interim Pastor to work through any remaining issues in the Church and to prepare the Church for a future pastoral appointment.
-
In November, 2012, Rev Neville Kellam was inducted as pastor and remained so until the end of November 2015. Pastor Neville’s ministry was characterised as a period of consolidation in the church. His preaching was encouraging, inspirational and appreciated, and he with his wife Dorothy were much loved.
-
From December 2016 to November 2021 Rev Darrell McKerlie served as pastor. We appreciated Pastor Darrell’s ministry, which included three years of active participation in the Stable One Winter Shelter for people experiencing homelessness, where people slept in the church for one night a week, and a period of COVID lockdown, where we learned that we could worship face to face via our computers, tablets, and phones. The ladies enjoyed the Bible studies, which Pam led at their home.
